"Sustainability" is defined as: "Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." (Bruntland, 1987)

The City of Lincoln City continues to focus on improving sustainability for itself and the community to address climate change while improving the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Mission Statement: To increase awareness and actions that foster a more sustainable living agenda for residents and visitors to thrive economically, socially and environmentally in Lincoln City.

To address sustainability, the City Council formed the Community Sustainability Committee, which meets once a month, to advise City Council on the education and promotion of wise and efficient use and conservation of energy and natural resources by the city of Lincoln City and all its citizens and visitors. To further that aim, City Council approved the 2007 Community Sustainability Plan to include focus on the following implementation goals:

  • Promotion of environmentally, socially, and economically improved alternatives for development, operations, and maintenance in the Lincoln City community at large;
  • Education and awareness of energy and resource conservation issues;
  • Green building codes and green power generation;
  • Recycling, composting, source reduction and solid waste/landfill reduction issues;
  • Electric and water conservation issues
  • Planting of native vegetation, invasive species removal, nonpoint pollution/watershed protection; and
  • Mass transit, affordable housing and alternative transportation
